Rotman International Trading Competition
The University of Lethbridge has a storied history of competing in the Rotman International Trading Competition, which is held by the University of Toronto and takes place in the third week of every February. This year it will take place online on February 25, 2021. The Rotman International Trading Competition is the biggest trading competition in the world and involves trading six separate cases over two days against roughly 50 different schools from every corner of the world. The cases traded are more advanced versions of the ones in the U of L’ s own trading league. The cases tend to be quantitative in nature and some utilize algorithms (Any Computer Science Majors who are interested in participating are encouraged to send an email to finance.club@uleth.ca expressing their interest and/or come to the club’s introduction day on September 24th at noon in the trading room (M2044) and talk to either Dylan, Keaton or Gabriel). Despite the U of L’ s smaller size it has routinely beat schools of bigger sizes and has managed to rout the likes of Stanford, MIT and Harvard. We have placed 8th, 18th, 18th and 16th in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively. The competition offers students a great opportunity to put concepts they have learned in class into practice and to network with students from all over the globe, as well as current members of the finance industry (the competition has been sponsored by likes of British Petroleum and Citadel).
There are multiple spots open for the U of L’ s Rotman International Trading Team and we are currently looking for passionate and curious students to participate in the 2023 competition. To be considered for the competition, students must be one of the top finishers in the U of L’s own trading league (while the scores of the students in the U of L’s Trading League are a factor in determining who will be part of the U of L’ s Rotman International Trading Team it is not the only factor. For example, the ability to come up with unique strategies and work well in groups are also major considerations). Students who excelled in the U of L ‘s Trading League will then be interviewed by Associate Professor of Finance Dr. Vishaal Baulkaran and a returning member of the U of L’ s Rotman International Trading Team in mid-November. The team will consist of five students and will be fully assembled by the end of November 2021 and will then begin preparing for the competition.
